Meet the trendsetters, style-makers & taste-formers who rule China’s fashion world

Forget the phrase ‘Made in China’ you should be saying ‘Created in China.’ As the world’s largest textiles manufacturer, and one of just a handful of countries that continue to steadily grow in the face of global recession, China has emerged as the brightest star in the fashion world firmament. Domestic labels are setting their creative sights on the cravings of some 1.4 billion consumers. Chinese supermodels are gracing the catwalks of New York and Milan. Shanghainese designers (take a bow, Qiu Hao) are winning international awards. Even local mega-company Mesterbonwe has opened the world’s first privately-owned costume museum.

But at the root of China’s fashion momentum are the country’s growing middle classes. Although not completely mature in expansion, the urban population is the key driving force behind this blossoming fashion phenomenon. The Chinese fashion industry is rapidly changing, too. Retailers, suppliers, designers, directors, publishers and high street shoppers are all going through an exciting phase of style evolution.

But who influences what modern China wears?
And which designers rule the runways?
And who sets the agenda for the high streets?

To draw a fuller picture of China’s growing fashion world, we interviewed the 25 most influential style-makers from across the industry, and the country, and asked them to give us their own unique insight.

It’s fashion, darling. Anything is possible…

I get the bulk of my products from Chinese manufacturers and they are always excellent quality.
