What it lacks in glamour, it more than makes up for in excitement. The SIFL's Hebiguchi cup first round proper took place on Saturday and did not disappoint. The 16 cup hopefuls were whittled down to 8 with all games having to be decided on the day. A Mickey Mouse cup this is not but,as the results show, some teams were certainly taking the mickey. Read on to find out who made it through to round two.

In the match of the day, cup specialists the Anzacs suggested another run is on the cards this season as they saw off the challenge of the Beaver. It finished 5-5 after 90 minutes, before the Anzacs edged through on penalties. Leading 4-3 at half time, the Anzacs were pegged back to 5-5 at full time by a spirited Beaver side. Goals from Stuart Willy, Rick Howard, Tor Iasksson (MoM) and a brace from Lee Kirk pushed the game to penalties where the Anzacs held their nerve to go through 5-4.

The Azzuri, winners of last season's SIFL cup, stated their intentions on the Heb cup this season, easing through their first round match 5-0 against first division promotion hopefuls Shanghai 2000. Two up at half time, the Italians did not take their foot of the pedal in the second half. The damage was done thanks to goals from Ivan Aliaga and a brace each for Guillaume Leclercq and Adam Kluger, who also netted himself the man of the match award. Qi Ling picked up the honours for Century Park-based Shanghai 2000 but it proved mere consolation.

In the day's only all-Premiership affair, Japan held off a second-half comeback from the Vikings to scrape through their encounter 3-2. First half goals from Youichi Murakami and Kazuhisa Okawa and an own goal put the Japanese in a seemingly unassailable three goal lead at half time. The Vikings, however, had other ideas. One inspired half time team talk later and the match was nearly turned on its head thanks to goals from Jasper Haslund and Toke Christensen (MoM). But it was not to be. The Japanese defense withstood a frantic final 10 minutes to prevent an improbably comeback and consequently ensuring their place in round two.

After over powering their supposed superiors in the qualifiers, the Krauts - Die Zweite saw off the challenge of the Crazy Turks on Saturday, running out winners by 2-0. Mark Xiang and Stefan Enneking grabbed second half goals for the Germans, though the result did seem to flatter. Goalkeeping heroics from MoM Kenny Liu and a strong defensive display ensured the Sauerkrauts made it through to the next round, despite the efforts of Turk MoM Mehmet Soylemez.

The Cosmos' recent upturn in results continued on Saturday as they extinguished Oranje's cup dreams thanks to a solitary Gerard Haughey goal. The first half strike ensured Cosmos' third win in four and sets them up nicely for this weekend's league encounter with the Shooters. Another MoM display from the evergreen Sam Russell, his sixth of the season, and stout defending ensured James Boyles' team made it in to the next round draw, courtesy of the 1-0 victory.

The Voodoo Child made a mockery of their league placing, turning in a stellar display in giving the Puxi Lions a real run for their money, though the Child's cup dreams were eventually put out as they went down 4-1. Man of the match Child keeper Colin White was the foundation on which the Voodoo defence held off the Lions' attack for the most of the game. Julian Goodes' second half strike raised the possibility of a cup upset, but it wasn't to be. The Child had no trouble interpreting the implications of a quick-fire hat trick from Mehdi Belhadia. A further goal from Muss Djeddai. put the game beyond doubt, and the Lions safely through to the next round.

The Shooters first visit to Century Park this season must have left them hoping they could play there more often as they ran out 9-1 winners against a beleaguered Long Tang side. An own goal coupled with strikes from Liese Abil, a couple each for Ayrton Viera and Roland Broughton and a hat trick for Jon Banks did the damage for the Shooters who were leading 5-1 at half time. A first half Cao strike proved mere consolation for Long Tang who have a week to lick their wounds before the upcoming visit of Reunited. Jeff Wuâ's goalkeeping heroics kept the score line down and earned him the MoM award whilst Roland Broughton picked up the honours for the Shooters.

Corea were knocked out of the cup in farcical circumstances on Saturday by failing to turn up for their 10am fixture! Fingers have been pointed at the Corean management for not setting camp Corea's alarm clocks to the right time but whatever the cause, the no show means that the Voodoo, who last year were knocked out by the Coreans in round two, make it through to the next round. Jon Levitt scooped the Voodoo MoM, his solid telephone performance ensured that at least the Voodoo made it to the pitch on time. Who said the (voodoo) magic of the cup had disappeared?

Fixture-meister general Brian Wallace has made some changes to this Saturday's games. Please read below for confirmation of all the weekend's fixtures.
