Football - SIFL
Tuesday, 01 December 2009 11:12 Written by Tom Gurney Week seven in the SIFL: six games unbeaten for the Lions and the Voodoo, five weeks left of 2009, four teams left battling for second place in the first, three hat tricks, two games with nine goals or more and one Christmas miracle – a goal for Daniel Radcliffe look-a-like Jonathan Levitt. With the Shooters having a rest week, the premiership’s top three had a great opportunity to pull away at the top of the table. It was only the Azzuri that capitalised on the favourable fixtures, and they did it in style smashing home seven against an Oranje Dutch outfit whose back line had holes not even Hans Brinker would have been able to fix. 7-2 was how it finished. The goals came from Wilson Marchionatti, Adam Kluger, Ben Baiye, Alexis Bauduin, a brace from Guillaume Leclercq and one for Andrea Vanini which capped off a man of the match performance. The performance of the day came from a rejuvenated Cosmos side who edged out third-placed Japan 1-0 and in the process inadvertently moving James Boyle to the top of the Shooters’ Christmas card list. Two wins on the bounce now for the Cosmos who seem have finally adjusted to life in SIFL’s top flight. Danny Gershoni’s second half strike did the damage and despite Hiroki Matsuura’s MoM performance, the Japanese were unable to grab an equaliser. The win means the Cosmos leap-frog the Beaver and Oranje to sixth spot and trailing to the Krauts only on goal difference. The Premiership’s only unbeaten side, the Puxi Lions, maintained their solid start to the season but were unable to take maximum points from a 10-man Beaver. 1-1 was how it ended, Fred Dron’s strike was cancelled out by the impressive Nick Muzyczka (MoM) in an action packed second half. Charles Georg was impressive upfront for the French, but it wasn’t to be. The point did however ensure the Lions remained at the top of the table for one more week. They lead the league with 14 points from their six games, one point ahead of the Azzuri. In the first division Reunited secured a good win as they put last week’s defeat behind them by knocking seven past Corea to tighten their grasp on second place. The Coreans more than played their part, but a Qing Yun Liu strike and a brace from Sung Wook Choi proved mere consolations. 3-1 up at half time, Reunited eventually ran out 7-3 winners. Hat tricks from Animashaun Ayodeji Godwin and Shuhei Fukutani - the latter grabbing four and the MoM award - did the damage, the only surprise was that Adebowale Adebowale did not make it on to the score sheet, even failing to put one away from the penalty spot. Reunited are now sitting in second place, six points behind the Voodoo but two ahead of nearest rivals Shanghai 2000. Anzacs’ all time top scorer Ian Lee grabbed the only goal of the game as Rick Howard enjoyed a successful return against his former club, the Voodoo Child. In a close encounter heroics from Anzacs’ vertically challenged keeper Mick Richmond and in particular from striker Tor Isaksson was essentially the difference between the two sides. Whilst Dan Fitzsimmons put in a strong performance at the back for the Voodoo Child, Julian Goodes was once again left scratching his head and wondering what might have been, The result cements the Childs’ grasp on ninth place, one point adrift of Long Tang. Shanghai 2000 continued their impressive debut season by turning a 1-0 half time deficit into a 3-1 victory and three more points against the Crazy Turks. Ekin Altun put the Turks in the lead in the first half with a goal that had the reds dreaming of a third win of the season but those hopes were soon extinguished thanks to second half strikes from Wang Jiajie, Wang Zuo and Wang Ke (insert vulgar terrace chant here). Qi Ling picked up the man of the match award for Shanghai 2000 and the win keeps them hot on the heels of Reunited as they trail to them only on goal difference. The only team in the SIFL with a 100% record showed no signs of taking their finger of the pulse on Saturday. The Voodoo comfortably ran out 6-0 victors against Long Tang with five of the goals coming in the second half as the Voodoo implemented a tactical reshuffle and Long Tang’s defence ran out of steam. Jeff Wu’s MoM performance was not enough for Long Tang, four goals from Ned Kelly were complemented by strikes from centrebacks Pete Wall and Jon Levitt. The win means the Voodoo have maximum points from their six games this season. Defeat for Long Tang leaves them looking over their shoulders only to see the Voodoo Child just one point below them. Next week the league has a rest, but there is no let up in the action. The Hebiguchi Cup starts with its first round proper. Games kick off from 10am at Tianma. The SIFL invites you all to its very unorganised Christmas party at the Bulldog. Please come down for a drink on Saturday 12 December from 8pm.
