Wednesday, 10 March 2010 04:03 Written by Easy Liese Yes, yes, finally the might of Africa, host continent of the 2002 World Cup, has found its voice in our ongoing World Cup Fanzone, where we catch up with Shanghai-based fans of each nation to find out about their loves and loathes, expectations for the summer, highs and lows from yesteryear, what they'll be singing and where they'll be singing it, and which of their heroes is ultimately going to blow it. Our very own Indomitable Lion is a Shooter and a Galacticos God, SPL Cup Final winning goalscorer, Easy Liese. FIFA World Ranking: 20th Greatest moment: It goes without saying that Cameroon gained world renown thanks to World Cup Italia 90. Every cabbie in China is happy to tell me about “Milla Da Shu”, Roger Milla and the Makossa Dance after his spectacular 4 goals. The result? Cameroon writes its name in the annals of history and is forever a footballing power to be reckoned with. The greatest moment of all came at the very beginning. In the opening game of the tournament The Indomitable Lions take on Argentina, World Cup holders from Mexico 86, with today's team Coach Diego Maradona the greatest player on grass. We were unknown to the wider world - who the hell are Cameroon? But in the the 67th minute a free kick from the left by Cyril Makanaki is deflected and Oman Biyick came from nowhere and, up like a salmon, did what he always did best. Pick that one out of the net Pumpido! David just slew Goliath and Africa explodes! Enjoy that moment again right here. Read more

Wednesday, 10 March 2010 03:03 Written by Tom Gurney Earlier than usual April showers caused havoc with the SIFL fixtures on Saturday. Games were called off at Century Park on the Friday whilst the two noon Tianma fixtures were canceled 60 minutes into the game. The Beaver-Krauts game was 2-2 at the time, but ReUnited were leading the Voodoo 2-0. SIFL schedule guru Marcus Pizzato has taken time off work this week to rework these games keep your eyes on the calendar for when the games will be rearranged to. Maybe Roland Broughton's post-match refereeing rant was misinterpreted by the rain gods? Who knows. One thing we do know is that ReUnited's manager Sebastian Becker was seen purchasing a voodoo doll on Sunday morning, though the target of his rage - Ned Kelly - shall remain anonymous. Two games involving the Premiership's top four did take place on Saturday. Top of the bill the encounter between top of the table Puxi Lions and the Shooters.

Monday, 08 March 2010 06:03 Written by Urbanatomy The third and final race in the Specialized Cup 2010 Shanghai Cyclocross Series is going down this Saturday, March 13. You don't have to be Lance Armstrong to participate. Hell, you don't even have to own a bike. The course is 70 percent off-road, 20 percent paved and 10 percent running. It's less technical than mountain biking, but you will have to hop off and clear obstacles along the way. There'll be hot drinks, music and free bike washes for participants. Racers go in two groups, with a half-hour race for the beginners' group and an hour-long race for more advanced cyclists. "It's pretty gruelling, physically," said cyclist Ed Cork. "So whilst it is great fun to hurl a bike around a course against your mates, I think the biggest reward is the sense of satisfaction you get when you cross the finish line ... all the pre-race anxiety melts away, and you can crack open a couple beers and laugh about that guy who fell in a ditch." Stuck in training wheels? Everyone is invited to come watch. It's a short course - not one of those long, boring bike races. And competitors are coming in from Suzhou, Hangzhou and even Beijing, said Cork. Registration starts at 8 a.m. Saturday, but you can save money by registering in advance (30 RMB in advance, 60 RMB onsite). For more information check out the Specialized Riders Club China website or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . You can rent a bike from Specialized if you don't have one for the event.

Kicking off proceedings is Shanghai super-Slovenian, Tina Majcen. FIFA World Ranking: 27th Greatest moment: Just eight years old as a country and ranked 88th in the world going into Euro Qualifying in 2000, Slovenia managed to qualify not only for Euro 2000, but then for the World Cup in 2002. A small nation of two million people, it’s like Hong Kong qualifying for the next two World Cups. Striker Mladen Rudolja put us through against Romania to qualify for the World Cup, sending the whole nation crazy. It was his only goal in 65 caps for the national side. No matter, "Turbo Rudi" will never need pay for a drink in Ljubljana again!

Three competitions, five games: the SIFL season recommenced last Saturday after a two-week break for the Chinese New Year. Rested and ready for action, nine teams made the trip to Tianma and Century park to commence battle. Nine teams? Yes, the Crazy Turks unable to field a team forfeited their game to the Anzacs, 5:0. The day's schedule included the first Hebiguchi Cup semi-final. Could the Lions keep their treble dreams alive? The Premiership saw one match, arguably the first six-pointer this season as the Beaver crossed swords with the Krauts. Elsewhere the Voodoo Child took on the Sauerkrauts whilst the Coreans pitted their wits against Shanghai 2000 at Century Park. The extra break on Saturday allowed an extra few hours cramming at the Shanghai library. Our congratulations go out to first ever SIFL quiz night winners. To find out what happened elsewhere, read on. In the first Hebiguchi Cup semi final Japan were up against the Premiership leaders, the Puxi Lions. Not only did they enter the game as favourites, the Lions had run out 6-0 winners against Japan just before the New Year's break. The opportunity to exact revenge, and give them a chance to claim their first silverware since 2005, was too good to turn down for Japan. Penalty kicks separated the teams with the Japanese holding their nerve after the game finished 2-2 in the normal 90. Japan's goals came from Kichiro Takeuchi and an own goal whilst the Lions' replies came from Frederic Dron and top scorer Allan Mendel. Uzair Rawji secured the Lions MoM whilst Keitaro Honbo picked up the award Japan. The second semi final between the Shooters and the Cosmos will take place in early April. |
