Monday, 01 June 2009 06:06 Written by Jack Barry One of the biggest events in the Chinese calendar is the Dragon Boat Festival. It’s fast approaching this month, and there’s no better way to celebrate than competing against (drumroll, please) the that’s Shanghai team. It’s one of the oldest festivals in China, originating from around 270 BC. Commemorating the Chinese poet Qu Yuan, huge boats are raced to a beating drum, symbolizing attempts to rescue him after he drowned on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month in the Mi Luo river. Traditionally, parcels of rice wrapped in bamboo leaves are also thrown in to the water to give the water creatures something to eat, other than poor Qu Yuan. Dragon Boat Racing takes place at the beautiful Xixi wetlands water park in Hangzhou. The initial rounds take place on June 13-14, and June 20-21, with the final rounds taking place the July 4-5. It’s RMB460 per person and includes transport, park ticket, lunch, dinner, equipment and training. Don’t forget to visit urbanatomy.com to see the final results. To get involved visit www.kubang.net (CHN) or call 400 880 5176 (Eng) to register your team.
