Learn the art of tease at Shanghai's seductive dance workshops

"A professional stripper taught me that it's about what you don't show as opposed to what you do," says a dance instructor from Shanghai's new Burlesque dance class at Blush dance studio. Blush will host weekly Burlesque classes for women of all ages and abilities. "This is a tangible way for women to access their femininity in today's cut-throat modern world," says Blush co-owner Adela from Prague.

The first Burlesque performance dates back to 16th-century Italy, and the theatrical dance technique has now evolved into a saucy mix of comedy, music, parody and the art of tease. The dance itself relies heavily on costume and accessories such as gloves, boas, hold-up stockings and corsets. Blush will provide these costume items during lessons, and they will also be for sale at the studio.

Although the dance itself is superb for fitness, coordination, rhythm and balance, you don't have to be athletic to participate; "but," says Adela, "you do need to come in prepared to feel good about yourself. You need to be able to leave those body hang-ups at the door, shed those inhibitions, have a giggle and get in touch with your inner showgirl." The raunchy dance technique teaches women how to have attitude and confidence; it releases pent-up emotions and becomes a fun medium for self-expression.

Blush will prepare students to eventually perform live (if they wish to) and take part in glamorous shows. Burlesque sessions will start soon (date and location tbc) and will cost RMB150 per class.
