Forget LeBron James’ Cleveland Cavaliers, Kobe Bryant’s L.A. Lakers or even Yao Ming’s Houston Rockets, there will only ever be one basketball team in our hearts. The greatest goddam basketball team to have ever graced the face of the planet (fact! see below): the one, the only, Harlem Globetrotters. And amazing news people, those wizards of dribble and clown-kings of the court are coming to Shanghai!

That’s right, everybody’s favorite exhibition team, who combine athleticism, theater and a healthy dose of comedy, not to mention some mad, mad skills, are playing two games at the Yuanshen Sports Center at 2pm and 7pm on Saturday December 12.

“How do we get tickets? How do we get tickets? How do we get tickets?”

Yup, that’s what we’re thinking too, and we’ll get back to you as soon as we’ve found out, as we have literally just been informed by the Sheraton Shanghai Hongqiao Hotel, who tell us that if you stay a minimum of two nights in a Deluxe Room you win a chance to watch them play. So if you can’t wait for the ticket office to open, don’t want to risk your chances with the scalpers, or simply fancy living it up a little, give them a call on 6275 8888.

The greatest goddam basketball team ever

Formed in 1926 in Chicago (not Harlem) the team went on a 2,495-game winning streak between 1962 and 1971, and lost only two games in 38 years (12,596 games) between 1968 and 2000. On February 27, 2006, the Globetrotters extended their overall record to exactly 22,000 wins. Their most recent loss came on March 31, 2006, when they went down 87–83 to the NABC College All-Stars to bring their loss tally to just 345, a winning percentage of 98.4%.

According to the Globetrotters' website, all of the Globetrotters' exhibition games are real games which, mentioning no names (yup, it was me), left one gulible goon in our editorial team mightily confused as a young boy as to why they didn’t enter and win the NBA. Next they’ll be telling him wrestling’s fixed…
