The Happy Valley amusement park is just one week away from it's official opening and it doesn't sound like thrill seekers are to be disappointed - what we've heard has us scared stiff. A terror-inducing 12 failures or breakdowns have hit the park since its 'soft' opening (that's right, even amusements have soft openings in Shanghai) on August 16.
We're not talking about broken down bumper cars here either - most of the problems are happening with the roller coasters. In one incident passengers on the 'Crazy Elf' were stuck on its 10-meter high rail when it stopped in midair for more than 10 minutes. They eventually got down on an emergency escape ladder. Meanwhile the park's landmark wooden roller coaster stalled seven times on its first day of operation.
Are Happy Valley bovvered though? Course not, they laugh in the face of death, saying the glitches were "normal and not at all dangerous." And cited the same problems occuring when Happy Valley first opened in Beijing and Shenzhen. Reassuring stuff. "Such small problems are really normal in setting up," said Zhong Lin, an official with the park and that facilities were expected to be all-systems-go by Saturday, before adding ominously, "But we can't promise we won't have any problems then." Ready for the (last) ride of your life?
