Our new series of Web exclusives asks foreign residents where they go to get the best downhome nosh from the old country
It's a common misconception that the American palate is attuned only to French fries and apple pies. On the contrary! As this week's panel plainly shows, the American diet is as colorful and diverse as its population... Either that or these guys need a quick geography lesson.
Joe Schaefer, freelance illustrator:
"For my monthly pizza fix I settle for a pie from Papa Johns or a few slices from NY Style Pizza. I like NY Style's ingredients, I just wish they weren't so stingy with toppings. Recently though, my number one go-to joint for American cuisine is Munchies. For Mexican I like ordering from Taco Loco, very cheap and damn good. Turbo cheap, versatile, and taste-wise they are reliable. I have also been to Carl's Jr. a couple times since it opened and have been very pleased with their burgers."
Chris Kelley, guitar virtuoso, sex machine and professional rum-drinker:
"For a burger, although I've never actually been there or even seen the place, I've ordered burgers from Munchies while at ILS [that's I Love Shanghai to all of you shut-ins - Ed.] in the evenings--cheap and greasy, just like a burger should be, and tastes fantastic.
For Mexican food, the enchiladas at Bubba's, the lengua tacos at Maya or the chicken quesadilla at Bamboo..Although no one in town has yet to do TexMex at the level it should be done. Being from Texas, i like a big combo plate with a taco, 2 enchiladas, a tamale, refried beans and Mexican rice. Sides of guacamole, salsa and sour cream are absolutely overflowing on the plate.
Chicken Wings: I still have to say Hooters, for the view and the wings.
BBQ: Bubba's for sure. Although it's not exactly what it is in Texas, it's the best you can do with limited resources in China..The pulled pork or BBQ sandwich are my favorites."
Jaret Shank, drummer for the band Moon Tyrant:
"Not having the most stable of cultural cuisines, but having the culture consistency of two parents of similar Euro-blood and economic upbringing, I have to say I am split between an affordable all-you-can-eat/drink Gengi and the old faithful, Windows' Scoreboard. Gengi's sashimi, unlimited draft beer along with Scoreboard's nachos and bottled tiger take the hometown hunger/parched pains away."
