Off Jiaozhou Lu, up a delapidated lift and through a set of huge industrial doors you’ll find Shanghai’s latest hip-hop club. Deeply dark save for a column of bright white lights that spell out ZEAL – big up yo’self – music blasts out onto a dance floor that is surrounded by an abundance of tables on which to mac daddy it up with a bottle (from RMB680) or get laidback sipping on gin and juice (RMB45), a wall of TV screens and diamante bead strings hanging from the ceiling completing the faux-bling look.

Positioned where it is, the plan is to become a destination club, with Back to School, Masquerade and Jungle Fever parties planned this month. Will it work in a market that is surely close to saturation? Who knows? When we were there the crowd was made up of wannabe Gs and their super-slutty looking hip-hop skank counterparts, which we suppose has appeal to some, just not us.
