Music
Friday, 19 June 2009 09:06 Written by Sarah Wainman This Sunday (21st June), Music Matters presents The Longest Day, a 12-hour eclectic showcase of Shanghai's best talent, featuring over 20 musical acts, football (and American football) fields, a bouncy castle, restaurant vendors, ice cream and all the beer you can drink. Urbanatomy caught up with the event organiser, Anthony Caw, get to the lowdown. What are you about? How long've you been around? It started because a lot of my friends were quite gifted musicians, so I started to organize events to showcase their talents. We’ve been doing it for about a year now. They’ve been a number of different events – about 10 or 11 – including Blind Dates. We basically do everything; it’s just chaos really. I’m not trying to reinvent music events; I just want people to have a good time. Are you just about a specific genre of music, or is the more eclectic the better? It’s about loads of eclectic music coming together. There’s always been a mix but never to this extent. This is the most ambitious project we’ve done. On the main stage, we have bands, DJs, a saxophone, xylophone…we have 11 or 12 DJs, some really really good, some really really bad, but we just want anyone who’s into their music to come along and enjoy it all. Tempt us. Who's playing? Why should we go? We’ve got a Chinese band called Black Lunar, as well as Monroe Stahr. There are no superstars or anything, just people I get on with! We’re going to have a barbeque, and play Beer Pong outside. Bulldog are doing the barbeque, Latitude Bistro are bringing sandwiches, and we’re got some street meat as well, just because it’s Shanghai. It’s also 150RMB all you can drink, so if you come at 2pm, you’ll be smashed by 6pm, but still get enough sleep for work on Monday! We’re going to have a Bouncy Castle. Everyone told me not to get it, but this is for me personally! If we wanted any more info about Sunday, where can we find it? The best way would be to email me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Alternatively, give me a ring on +86 152 211 789 77. Any embarrassing stories from past events you want to share with us? I used to stand on stage after too much to drink, and yell abuse at people, and have to be taken off stage…I don’t do that anymore. Finally, in your opinion, why does music matter? It’s just amazing. I love the people that you meet – promoters, night clubs owners as well – there are just a lot of cool dudes out there. 570 West Huai Hai Road ; 2pm - 3am. RMB150 for everything.
