Thursday, 03 December 2009 05:12 Written by Xinlei Wang In this cold winter season, Singaporean design company decollection has unveiled its first line of collectible art pieces, the dark 'til dawn series of designer lamps, which aims to bring a warm glow to the Christmas and winter holiday season. Each of the 30 lamps in the series has been designed and hand-painted around one of American poet Shelly Bryant's haikus. Bryant has worked closely on the project together with decollection's Chinese artist Peter Zhou, who designed and painted each lamp. The poems and paintings in the series evoke a feeling of wistfulness. There is a sense of hope underlying the collection, even through dark times. Attendees at the launch last month had high praise for the workmanship and artistry of each piece in the series. Bryant's poems have appeared widely in magazines, journals, and websites around the world. Her main body of work has been in the field of speculative poetry, which often employs haiku and related minimalist forms in its expression. Some of the 30 haiku in the series have been previously published in science fiction and speculative poetry magazines. Zhou's recontextualization of the images evoked by Bryant's haiku into more traditional Chinese paintings has created a whole new form of expression for the pieces. The dark 'til dawn series is the first collaborative effort by Bryant and Zhou, and also marks the first line of collectible art pieces released by decollection. Each hand-painted lamp is a unique design, and comes accompanied by a birth certificate signed by both poet and artist. Interested parties may contact the decollection office at 34240095 to arrange for a private viewing.
